I was (not so subtly) reminded today that it’s been a while since I have updated the blog and should probably do so! I hope that you will accept my apologies for this and if not, I guess I will just have to use my famous charm eh?
As most of you probably know, life has been pretty crazy for us over here.. and not in a good way! So, I decided it might do us a bit of good to get out of town and blow off some steam. Being Cinco de Mayo, it seemed the perfect time for a mini vacation. Packed the bags and off to New Orleans we went!
Oh, did I say blow off some steam? Turns out we didn’t do a whole lot of that but rather, it was quite steamy. And I’m not just talking about the weather, which it most definitely was. (Wink, wink. I guess that’s just par for the course though, yes?) New Orleans is basically just a sauna this time of year. Absolutely tropical weather, absolutely sultry.
Our first day in town, I knew exactly where I wanted to take the gang out to eat. Being Cinco de Mayo, Mexican was the obvious choice so off to Superior Grill we went! (Odd choice of name, I know) Located on St Charles between Uptown and the Garden district, the location is quintessential New Orleans with it’s old gnarly oak trees, Spanish moss and garden district architecture. The place just oozes seduction and charm, especially after the sun goes down and the lanterns are all ablaze.
I ordered the crawfish enchiladas because where else can you get crawfish enchiladas?! It sounds like such a strange combination but honestly.. It’s really delicious. You should try it some time. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Afterwards, we decided to hit Bourbon St for some old fashioned debauchery. Bourbon St lives up to it’s name there! I do have to caution you though, don’t wear open toed shoes! New Orleans is known for it’s very lenient laws on consumption of alcohol (well, duh) and Bourbon St is party central. Hopefully, you follow that line of thought and I don’t need to elaborate any further. Aside from the obvious, Bourbon St is home to all manners of debauchery that New Orleans has to offer.
We went sight seeing the next day. Checked out some of the voodoo shops in the French Quarter, stopped to appreciate the jazz players at some of the open-air cafe’s, and went to get a beignet at Du Monde’s because of course! If you aren’t familiar with them, beignets are a deep fried pastry that’s then sprinkled with powdered sugar and usually accomplied by a cafe au lait or chicory coffee. A New Orleans specialty! Just don’t make my mistake of breathing in too deeply while eating it… unless, of course, you wish to inhale powedered sugar.
We wrapped up our trip venturing out of New Orleans to Metairie for sushi that is just out of this world. Located on Veteran’s Blvd just off I- 10 is a gem called Shogun. I could literally make an entire post just on how amazing their food is. It’s just simply that good. We strolled in at about 8:30 pm, ravenous from a full day’s activities and eager to eat our weight in gold. We weren’t disappointed.
I got several rolls, but honestly… the Utah roll is the star of the show here. I wish I had remembered to take a picture. It’s shrimp tempura and cream cheese on the inside, topped with a super creamy crab mixture and then on top of that mixture, avocado and tuna, and then finished off with a drizzle of spicy mayo and eel sauce. It’s a bit pricey, but this roll is massive and so delish. Heaven! Watching my date try to fit it in her mouth.. hmm.. that entertainment was just an added bonus.
Speaking of dates, my companion for the night is giving me intense bedroom eyes at this current point. Judging from her musings, I better go attend to her and pronto. It was lovely catching up. I do apologize again! Until next time, Laissez les bons temps rouler!
